Drawing and Painting
I have dabbled in pencil sketching since I was a lad. My strengths were in inanimate objects like tanks and aircraft, popular topics in my childhood during war years. I was never very good at natural subject like trees, animals and people, and usually made a mess of colours. As you will see on the Sculpture page, I discovered a talent for three dimensional art, and in potrait and figure work. However I was always at a disadvantage in my inability to make realistic pencil or charcoal sketches.
In about 2001 I joined a water colour class on board a cruise ship, and got on well with proper tuition. Since then I have joined in several painting groups on ships and elsewhere, mostly with unstructured tuition. My ability is slowly improving and I enjoy water colours, early attempts with pastels and most recently with graphite. I can make quite good likenesses, better from photographs than from life. In recent years years I have joined a general art group of the local U3A, doing mostly water colours, and later and switched to pastels.
